How does chronic stress and trauma influence the functioning of our brain and nervous system, which can result in developing chronic pain later in life?
When considering chronic stress, we need to take into account the influence Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and developmental trauma have in forming our neural networks and immune system. If someone is exposed to significant stress on the nervous or immune systems in childhood, then there is a greater risk of developing chronic pain and other long-term health conditions, such as diabetes or heart conditions, in adulthood.
