Are Certain Personality Traits Associated With Chronic Illness?

Yes, certain personality traits are associated with the development of chronic health issues (hello, my fellow “type A” people πŸ‘‹πŸΌ). It’s thought that these are all related to adaptive patterns from childhood, trauma responses, and how our nervous systems have changed in order to help us feel safe or in control.
.
And this is not something to beat yourself up about. If you identify with any of these traits, it simply means that your limbic system may be more sensitive than most. And this can tip over into chronic pain, fatigue, and other symptoms.
.
Dr. John Sarno noticed these personality traits in his chronic pain patients, and I see most of them in my clients too. Including myself!
.
But just because you might have these traits, that doesn’t mean you can’t get better. It’s just one layer of the underlying mechanisms behind why you developed chronic symptoms in the first place. And the brain can be rewired!
